Creating an Alkaline Body

bloodOur internal body fluids are home to our blood cells, and this internal ecosystem must be in an alkaline state, with a pH of around 7.4 to create optimal health and vitality. When our blood and blood plasma is alkaline, then our red blood cells can thrive, and our white blood cells can get a rest from fighting off free radicals and many forms of toxins. But if your body tends to have an acidic pH around 6.5 to 5.5, then your cells will degenerate faster and cause you to have more health challenges, and your white blood cells will be overwhelmed with the job of cleaning up, and you will tend to feel tired.

Most of us have grown up never hearing any mention about our body’s pH. We know that a normal body temperature is around 98.6 degrees and anything that varies from that leads to an imbalance resulting in symptoms of fever or hypothermia. The pH scale ranges from 1, being extremely acid, to 7, which is neutral, all the way to 14, which is extremely alkaline. But unlike our temperature measured by degrees, the pH scale is logarithmic, so just by moving up or down by one number multiplies the condition in multiples 10 times greater.

Let’s face it: our lives are not becoming any less acidic. The impact of diet, emotional stress and damaging environmental exposures all contribute to the over-acidification of the body. This is what happens when our production of acids exceeds our exposure and intake of alkalinity, oxygen and mineral buffers.

The organ systems in the body are functions that operate in the acidic rang—like the skin can vary from 4.5 to 7.0 and the stomach acid ranges from 1.0 to 3.0. But the blood
has a very narrow pH range: 7.35 to 7.45. If the pH of your blood goes outside that range, even just a little, the functioning of your organs can become compromised.

Our lifestyle can have many stress factors like an acidic diet, dehydration, exposure to radiation and electromagnetic frequencies from computers and cell phones, carbon monoxide from driving, emotional turmoil, lack of sleep, organ function disharmonies and a build up of toxins. Most of the population living in working communities is exposed to, and in many cases, bombarded by, acidic conditions every day.

Ask yourself how many acidic factors are you exposed to each day and how many alkalizing factors are you exposed to?

When there is over-acidification in the body, it must take action to survive. Survival means protecting the vital organs first. The body will send acids to the kidneys for elimination but overloads will cause the kidneys to become weak. The body will have to buffer with whatever resources it has available. If our diet is nutrient deficient, then the body must take minerals from the muscles and bones. This of course will lead to weakened bones, arthritic joints and painful muscles.

If you have enough alkaline buffers in your system, they mix with the acids and become neutral salts. But most of us don’t and so the body stores the acids deep into the tissues and will generate fat cells for storage which can withstand pH fluctuations better than the blood.

How do we create the balance?


Creating balance is challenging because our soil has been depleted, the water is not pure and the increase of chemicals, pesticides, herbicides and GMO food production is leaving us with poor nutrition and increased levels of acidity. This factor is why we need to cleanse our body by doing seasonal detoxification.

Where do we find alkalinity? Our drinking water should be purified and alkaline at a pH of 7.2 up to 9.5. This requires that we use alkalizing mineral drops or use a water ionizer machine. Go to our Resources page.

We are 80% fluids, and we need to maintain consistent levels of hydration. Hydration is determined by how much your body weighs (1 qt. of water for every 40 lbs.).

Clean air oxygenates our blood cells. How often do you get lots of fresh air and sunshine? Organic fruits and vegetables are alkaline; the greener they are, the higher the alkalinity. Minerals, including calcium, magnesium, potassium, manganese and iron, will combine with acids to create neutral salts. These are best when taken in a bio-available form as in ionic mineral powders added to water.

peaceFinally, and perhaps most importantly, calm, kind and peaceful thoughts experienced in reflection and meditation are very alkaline. Love and compassion are high vibrations contributing to an energized alkaline body, mind and spirit. Do you have a consistent way to truly be in this state of peace?

The goal is not to eliminate all acidic foods like grains, beans, dairy and meat. If you are eating some of these acidic foods, it is important to eat them as ¼ acid food with ¾ alkaline foods, like having a big salad with a small portion of fish or meat.

Unless you are juicing and blending your green organic foods and taking in 4 to 6 servings a day, you will not be able to get the minerals and nutrients you need to turn over-acidification around. So it is important to drink alkaline water with a pH over 8 and to use mineral supplements in a bio-available form as mentioned above. Seaweeds and herbs are also high in minerals.
